Meet Carlos Escasena, MD

• •
Encouraged and inspired by his family, Dr. Carlos Escasena has dreamed of becoming a physician since he was a teenager. His fascination with the human brain and its ability to control every aspect of our being grew and intensified during his undergraduate years. He completed a degree in biology at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, and it was during his college years that he noticed science was one of his strengths. As an athlete, he endured many injuries, and the rehabilitation process increased his understanding of the anatomy of the central nervous system. It also compelled him to further study the intricate pathways for alleviating pain.

In order to pursue his passion and learn more about other cultures, Dr. Escasena went to the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Mexico. During his years as a medical student, he found himself very attracted to the field of neurology, which involves the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles, and particularly headache medicine.

After graduating from medical school, he completed the Fifth Pathway Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he also completed his internship. He completed his neurology residency at The State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. There, he found it appealing to be able to help those individuals whose lives were disrupted by severe headaches and who sought to regain control of their daily routines through specialized treatments.
He was so interested in headaches that he undertook a clinical fellowship in Headache Medicine at Mount Sinai West Roosevelt Headache Institute and Adolescent Headache Center in New York. During the fellowship, he worked alongside Dr. Lawrence Newman, the former president of the American Headache Society, and fellows of the American Headache Society.

He was also involved in a clinical trial which investigated the use of BOTOX for patients with New Daily Persistent Headaches. He has extensive expertise in procedures such as BOTOX injections, trigger point injections and nerve blocks. He has presented at the Annual American Headache Symposium and the Headache Cooperative of New England Annual Symposium. He is a 2014 recipient of the “Frontiers in Headache Research Scholarship” Award by American Headache Society.

Dr. Escasena’s professional memberships include American Headache Society, International Headache Society, and American Academy of Neurology.

Dr. Escasena has realized that headache is not just a single problem. Headaches can have multiple causes or triggers, which is why he likes to take time to listen to his patients and develop individualized plans. Through nearly a decade of practice, the doctor thoroughly understands the impact of migraines on one’s life.

For Dr. Escasena, the treatment of patients who suffer from chronic severe headaches is a personal matter. Throughout his life, Dr. Escasena had several close relatives who suffered from incapacitating headaches. His desire to be on the leading edge of Headache Medicine, as well as his personalized approach to diagnosis and treatment of each patient, make him an ideal practitioner to serve the patients who seek pain relief.
